Karnataka MBBS Seats: KEA NEET Eligibility & Seat Matrix

Karnataka MBBS Seats

Karnataka stands out as a premier hub for medical education in India. Every year, thousands of aspiring doctors look toward this state for their medical journey. The state offers an impressive number of MBBS seats through both government and private medical institutions. For the 2026 academic year, the opportunities are greater than ever before. Under the 85% government state quota, authorities have opened up a total of 3,476 seats.

These seats span various reservation categories to ensure fair access. The categories include the General Merit, Hyderabad-Karnataka region, Special Category, and Government NRI or Management quotas. Among these options, the General category holds the highest share. It provides 2,369 seat allocations for qualifying students. Medical aspirants from all corners of India view Karnataka as a dream destination. The state boasts highly reputed colleges and a legacy of excellent healthcare training. Furthermore, the affordable fee structures in government colleges make it an attractive choice for families.

Eligibility Criteria for KEA NEET 2026

Navigating the admission rules set by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) can sometimes feel overwhelming. The eligibility criteria change quite a bit depending on the specific type of seat you want to claim. To clear up the confusion, we can break down the requirements into simple categories.

1. Government Seats under the State Quota

The state reserves these highly coveted seats primarily for local students from Karnataka. To qualify, you must satisfy specific domicile and educational rules. First, you need to have studied in an educational institution within Karnataka for a minimum of seven years. Second, you must have successfully passed your Class 12 or equivalent examination from a recognized board inside the state. This includes the Karnataka PUC, CBSE, or ICSE boards.

2. Private College Seats

Private medical institutions offer different entry pathways for local and non-local students. If you want to apply here, you need to understand two main sub-categories.

The first pathway is the Open Quota, often referred to as the OPN quota. The best part about the Open Quota is that students from any state in India can apply. You do not need a Karnataka domicile certificate to claim these seats. The second pathway is the General Merit Private quota, known as GMP. Unlike the Open Quota, the GMP seats are strictly for students who hold a valid Karnataka domicile.

Regardless of your domicile status, everyone must meet the basic academic qualifications. You must pass your Class 12 exams with four core subjects. These subjects are Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English. Additionally, you must score at least 50% marks in your Physics, Chemistry, and Biology practicals and theory combined.

3. NRI and Management Quota Seats

If you do not fit into the state quota or open merit categories, you can look at the NRI and Management quotas. These seats are open to a wider group of applicants. Any NEET-qualified Indian citizen, Non-Resident Indian (NRI), or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) can apply. However, you should prepare for the financial aspect. These seats carry a much higher price tag. The annual tuition fees generally range from ₹30 lakhs to ₹50 lakhs per year.

MBBS Seat Reservations and Seat Distribution

Karnataka proudly ranks among the top five states in the entire country for medical education. For the 2026 academic session, the state features 72 functional medical colleges. Together, they offer a staggering total of 13,944 MBBS seats across government, private, and deemed universities. This massive volume makes Karnataka the state with the highest number of medical seats in India.

When we look closer at the numbers, government medical colleges account for 4,113 of these seats. This total pool divides into two main pathways. First, 637 seats go to the 15% All India Quota, which handles national counseling. Second, the remaining 3,476 seats stay within the state system for local KEA counseling.

If you participate in the state-level counseling, you will have access to a total of 10,559 MBBS seats. This state pool combines several different institutional types. It includes the 3,476 government quota seats located inside government colleges. It also features 6,895 seats inside private medical colleges. Finally, the pool includes 188 special seats in deemed universities that the state offers at low government fee rates.

Because the options are so vast, you must study the seat distribution very carefully before counseling starts. Understanding the reservation system gives you a major strategic advantage during college selection.

A Deeper Look into the 85% Government Seat Reservations

The 85% government quota serves as the backbone of affordable medical education in Karnataka. KEA splits these 3,476 seats into four distinct reservation categories to support different student groups.

The General category remains the largest block by far. It contains 2,369 seats, which represents nearly 68.15% of the entire government quota. Because of this large volume, general merit students have a strong statistical chance of securing a spot.

Next comes the Hyderabad-Karnataka reservation category. This regional quota provides 855 seats to support students from historically underdeveloped districts. This specific allocation makes up about 24.59% of the total available government seats.

Beyond these regional and merit brackets, the state sets aside 195 seats under the Special Category quota. This group, which constitutes about 5.63% of the seats, assists defense families, sports achievers, and physically challenged students. Lastly, the Government NRI or Management quota in select colleges accounts for 57 seats, which is roughly 1.63% of the total pool.

When you add all these pieces together, you get the complete picture of the 3,476 seats available for the 2026 counseling cycle. By understanding these exact numbers, you can plan your application strategy effectively and maximize your chances of wearing that white coat.
