Old Delhi vs. North Delhi: Which One to Explore First?

Delhi travel guide

Introduction

Can you believe that Delhi is big? It is chaotic, colorful, historical, modern, and everything in between. But while you’re planning your trip, there comes the problem: Old Delhi or North Delhi first? Neither would be an easy choice, I’m sure.

One day, I spent wandering through the alleys of Old Delhi with spice stalls on either side, and the other day I was sipping cold coffee at one of the cafes on North Campus. Both parts have got their own soul, so let’s nip this from ever being said about yours truly over chai by a fellow traveler.

Old Delhi—Heart of the History

Like time travel, Old Delhi is an option. Usually crowded, noisy, and sometimes overwhelming in the best way possible, it is akin to being in a bygone century. Imagine a rickshaw squeezing down narrow alleyways, with the fragrance of jalebis and kebabs filling the air, and the rest is awash with the clamor of shopkeepers hawking their wares.

Must-see attractions? The Red Fort, Jama Masjid, and of course, Chandni Chowk are a must. Pro tip: Come hungry. I’m very hungry. The street food is quite simply mind-blowing: parathas, chaat, and the famous Karim’s kebabs.

But it is about more than sightseeing—Old Delhi is an experience. One moment you may be bargaining for bangles, the next you may lose track of time in a haveli over the course of a few centuries. It is real and raw—not curated for Instagram, which only adds to its magic.

North Delhi: The Antithesis of Old Delhi, Where Heritage Meets Chill Vibes

Now turning the coin gives you a glimpse of North Delhi. Leafy boulevards, big parks, and some of the oldest educational institutions in the country stand here. Charming but laid-back, not demanding at all.

Delhi University North Campus is alive. Full of students, street musicians, unique book vendors, and cafés with actual personality—this place buzzes with youthful energy. Here, amid architectural jewels like St. Stephen’s College and Miranda House, you almost get tempted to go back to college.

One hidden gem here that often gets overlooked is the Kamla Nehru Ridge Delhi stretch. It’s quiet, green, and full of history—perfect for those moments when you want to catch your breath and still feel connected to the city’s past.

Oh, and about shopping? Definitely do not miss out on Kamla Nagar Market. From cool fashion finds to scrumptious momos (yes, there is a whole love affair between Delhi and momos).

So…if you want to ask, where do you start?

Being honest, it depends on your mood.

Are you in the mood for an intense cultural explosion? In that case, your answer is Old Delhi, shell-shocking your senses for the best possible.

Do you want to relax in the warm folds of Delhi and easily discover some chill corners? Then North Delhi should be first on your itinerary. Relaxing but not condescendingly.

Myself, I would go first to Old Delhi and then start warm in North Delhi. The contrasting experiences would be all the more appreciated. Think of a rock concert, followed by a soulful unplugged session; at the end, it’s just music; the parameters define its varying genres.

And, oh, before I forget, when in the vicinity of North Delhi, an offbeat heritage place that should not be missed is the William Fraser Bungalow. Damnedest colonial reminder ever, right in the chaotic present of Delhi. So worth it!

Final Thought

No matter which way you choose to go first, Delhi never disappoints. Every corner narrates a thousand stories. Carry a water bottle, keep your phone charged, and most importantly, come with an open heart and a curious mind.

Happy travels!
